The Nuyorican Poets Cafe (236 East 3rd St. (between Ave B & C)

O.K...so this place is amazing. The Nuyorican Poets Cafe is a cozy but hip little brownstone hangout spot in Alphabet City. Though the cafe is famous for its Friday night Poetry Slams and Wednesday night Open Mics, it's home to many Jazz, Latin jazz, Hip Hop, and Blues sounding bands and neighborhood artists. The prices are cheap..ranging from $5- 15, depending on the artist and the night. But don't let the name fool you. This place is by no means a cafe. They don't have coffee, nor do they serve those miniature biscotti's or lovely little pastries we've all come to love. It's mostly beer and alcohol, but entrance is open to all ages. Check out the link for a calender of events.
